Be Careful When Dating Your Ex

When you have an ex, there is usually a valid reason. However, people are capable of changing and sometimes this can lead to a reconciliation of your former relationship. On the other hand, it could also give you a reminder as to why you two split up to begin with. In either case, couples that have separated often hook back up to try to rekindle the great times. As complicated as the situation can be, it can be even more convoluted if the ex is your child’s father. Depending on how old your little one is, it could be quite confusing.

Emotional Status of the Child

Depending on how the relationship ended the first time around, your kiddo could be emotionally distraught. This can be seen in behaviors, mannerisms and even eating patterns. However, it can also be hidden. Your child could be suffering silently, especially if you didn’t take the time to explain the situation as best you could to your little one.

If daddy is back in the picture, it could send mixed signals to the child. It’s relatively easy for a kid to get his or her hopes up if it looks like the family dynamic is going to come back together. If you realize that the two of you are better off separated, it could further emotionally damage the child.

Why Did You Break Up?

Knowing why you broke up in the first place will give you an idea whether or not he has changed. Perhaps it’s you that were in the wrong. Regardless of the situation, you need to be sure that what caused the problem isn’t going to come back and haunt you later.

Give Yourself Ample Time

Although the two of you have a report, you should still take the situation as though you’re dating for the first time. This will give you ample time to discover if there is a chance the two of you can work things out. Some experts say to give yourself up to six months before bringing a date to meet the child. It may also be a good idea to do the same with the father. By then, you should have an idea whether old habits will come back or not.

Dating your ex can always be a slippery slope – for you and the child. Go into the relationship with your guard up. Although it’s possible to change, not everyone will. What caused the break up before could be what causes the problem now.
